Dr Sue Pattison - Biography

PhD. MA. Dip Couns. MBACP (Accred). Cert Ed. HV.RGN.

Sue has had a long career working with adults, children, young people and families in practice and an academic career at the Universities of Durham and Newcastle and presently with Arden University. She has written Diploma and Degree courses for universities in counselling, psychotherapy and clinical supervision as well as bespoke courses for organisations, including school counselling training for the EU. She has trained counsellors, psychotherapists and supervisors in Kenya, Hong Kong, South Africa and Turkey. Her work includes examining counselling and supervision courses at Universities such as Cambridge, Keele, Manchester, Nottingham, Edinburgh and Teesside. She was Joint Chair of the Children, Young People and Families Division of BACP for many years, and a supportive member of Counsellors Together UK. Course Overview

The Diploma in Clinical Supervision contains all the elements of a high quality course that will help you to gain accreditation as a supervisor. The course is Accredited by the CPD Standards Office. As a course that meets high standards it includes the following components:

  • Knowledge - models and theories of supervision, ethics and the law

  • Skills - supervision competences

  • Practice - with a training supervisee

  • Expert Clinical Supervision and Coaching - provided by Dr Sue Pattison or a colleague (additional supervision fees)

Eligibility Criteria

You are eligible to join the course if you are ready to build on your knowledge and skills and extend your practice to supervision. In addition, you must fulfill the following criteria and have a successful online or telephone interview.

  • You should be a qualified counsellor or psychotherapist with practice experience

  • You may already supervising and want a formal qualification

  • You need to have access to a supervisee to work with for the practice part of the course

  • You must provide an up to date CV

Course Structure

The course is designed to be completed in a minimum of three months. This is to allow time for the practice part of the course. The three components of the Diploma are set out here along with the assessment requirements:

  • Knowledge

    This part of the course is online and you will work through the required modules. There are three double modules, each with two main parts, as you will see in the curriculum. You can complete the online modules at your own pace, but one a month is recommended.

  • Skills

    The skills used in your therapeutic work will be built on and those used in supervision will be developed through knowledge from models and theories, but also in your practice as a trainee clinical supervisor. Sue or a colleague will help you develop your practice skills through the supervisory process and additional coaching.

  • Practice

    You will need to work with one supervisee for this course, this will be your training supervisee. You will be required to carry out at least three 90 minute trainee supervision sessions or equivalent to achieve the Diploma. This work will be supervised by Sue or a colleague (*additional fees apply) online via Zoom or an altenative platform.

  • Assessment

    The course is assessed through submission of a Portfolio of Evidence including a 1) a 2000 word case study pulling together theory, skills and practice; 2) a 1000 word reflective account of your own process of becoming a supervisor 3) feedback sheets from your training supervisee. All other components of the course must be completed.

Payment Information

  • The full course fee must paid at the start of the course, coaching fees are due at the time of coaching meetings

  • Course fee is £660.00

  • Supervision coaching fees are in addition to the course fee and you will need 3 x 1 hour of supervision (one hour per month) with Sue or a SPC trainer at £65.00 per hour. Therefore you will need to set aside £195 for your training supervision meetings.

  • What if I don't have a supervisee? ANSWER - This can happen, perhaps you could supervise a colleague for three months, or a counsellor or psychotherapist from your network.

  • Is this course accredited? ANSWER- YES- The Diploma is Accredited with the CPD Standards Office.

  • After I've completed this course will I be qualified to supervise? ANSWER - Yes, this is a formal qualification and can be included on your CV and on job applications as a qualification in clinical supervision.
